Government Responds After Protests Outside Raila Odinga’s Home
The national government, through the Ministry of Lands, has moved to dismiss claims that it played a role in grabbing 2,600 acres of land in Kibiko, Kajiado County. The Ministry says it has no involvement in any scheme to take the land from its rightful owners.
This clarification comes a day after a group of Kajiado residents staged a protest outside the Karen home of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The demonstrators urged him to step in and help resolve the dispute.
During the protest, some locals accused senior government officials—among them Lands Principal Secretary Nixon Korir and Kajiado West MP George Sunkuyia—of allegedly facilitating the takeover of the multi-billion-shilling property.
The demonstrators held placards with messages such as “Korir Must Go!”, “Baba Help Us,” and “Justice for the Maasai Community,” and demanded the resignation of PS Korir.
In response, the Ministry of Lands issued a statement strongly rejecting the accusations. Jibril Adan, the Head of Communications at the Ministry, described the claims against PS Korir and other officials as false, dishonest, and intended to mislead the public.
According to the Ministry, the land dispute is not new—it began in 2014 and involves the Keekonyike Community Trust in Kibiko and other parties who claim ownership. Both sides have filed several petitions over the years as they sought to resolve the conflict.
The Ministry further explained that the dispute went through lengthy court proceedings. In March 2025, the court directed that the title deed for the land be surrendered and held by the court while the matter was being finalized.
By July 2025, after the surrender of the title, the court closed the case and allowed the issuing of new title deeds based on its decision.
The Ministry maintained that anyone still dissatisfied with the outcome is free to seek justice through the courts handling the matter since 2014. It also warned against attempts to tarnish the reputation of government officials, saying such efforts are baseless and dishonest.
Additionally, the Ministry accused the Kajiado County Government of escalating tensions and misleading the protesting residents instead of helping to calm the situation.
