Gachagua and Matiang’i Face Off as Unity in Opposition Starts to Wobble

Fresh tensions are brewing inside the United Opposition after a fallout involving two of its most influential figures — former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and ex–Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

The disagreement centres on how the coalition should pick its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, a position both men are eyeing.

On Friday, October 3, Gachagua took a swipe at Matiang’i, accusing him of seeking endorsement in closed-door hotel talks and private meetings. He insisted that leadership cannot be negotiated behind curtains but earned through public engagement.

According to Gachagua, the only credible way to choose a flagbearer is by going to the grassroots and speaking directly with citizens.

“Becoming President is about political mobilisation. Some people want to sit in boardrooms and hotels, exchanging theories,” he said.

“You don’t create a President in a boardroom. Presidents are made in the field,” Gachagua stressed.

His remarks were seen as a jab at Matiang’i’s quiet style, which some claim focuses more on elite consultations than countrywide tours, unlike other opposition hopefuls.

Matiang’i, who once commanded massive influence in government, is reported to be working closely with powerful figures behind the scenes. He is also believed to be Jubilee Party’s favourite, a party led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

But he didn’t let Gachagua’s attack go unanswered. In a swift comeback, Matiang’i told his supporters he would soon hit the ground for a full-scale national campaign.

Speaking to over 500 youths in Nakuru, he defended his tactics and promised that his real strategy would soon unfold for everyone to see.

“To those calling me a technocrat who cannot campaign, let’s meet on the ground,” he said.

“I’ll wear my Skechers and go to every village in this country, speaking to Kenyans for their votes and support so we can transform this nation,” Matiang’i added.

Their feud comes at a time when cracks are becoming visible within the united opposition, with insiders pointing to growing mistrust and internal battles.

Another key figure, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka — also seen as a potential presidential candidate — has stirred controversy after reports that he secretly met President William Ruto, further shaking the coalition as the 2027 race heats up.
