PS Omollo: Govt to Recruit 100,000 Youth

PS Omollo: Government to Recruit 100,000 Youth Through Kazi Mtaani and NYOTA Programs

The government has announced plans to hire 100,000 young people across the country under the revived Kazi Mtaani program.

This initiative, which had previously attracted thousands of applicants before being halted due to budget shortages, is now set to make a strong comeback.

Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo confirmed the news during an interview on Ramogi FM on Tuesday night. He explained that the government had now secured enough funds to roll out the program in all 46 counties outside Nairobi, where the project had already resumed earlier in June.

According to Dr. Omollo, the temporary suspension of the Kazi Mtaani program was purely due to budget constraints.

However, with new funding in place, the government is ready to extend the initiative to other regions. “Kazi Mtaani is officially set to resume across the country, and our goal is to recruit at least 100,000 youth to benefit from the program,” Omollo said.

NYOTA Programme: Empowering Youth Through Skills and Opportunities

Dr. Omollo also spoke about the NYOTA Programme, another government initiative designed to empower young people through training, certification, and funding opportunities. He revealed that the initial plan under the program was to recruit at least 70 young people per ward, a move that would have brought the total number of participants to about 100,000.

Under this program, around 90,000 youth will be enrolled in technical and vocational training courses. The aim is to equip them with hands-on skills that can help them secure employment or start their own businesses.

In addition to training, the government also plans to provide business funding support to at least 100,000 young people. This is part of a larger effort to promote youth entrepreneurship and reduce unemployment by offering financial and technical assistance to those with promising business ideas.

Dr. Omollo noted that the government will also recognize individuals who have gained technical expertise through informal work or apprenticeships. These youth will receive official certificates acknowledging their prior learning, making it easier for them to find jobs or grow their businesses.

Massive Interest from Youth Applicants

During the verification exercise, the government discovered an overwhelming response — about 400,000 applicants had shown interest in joining the program.

This figure was far beyond the government’s initial target, highlighting the urgent need for more youth empowerment opportunities.

Dr. Omollo said that while only 100,000 youth will be taken in the initial phase, the government is already exploring ways to raise additional funds to accommodate the remaining 300,000 applicants.

He assured that all young people who miss out in the first round will eventually benefit through training, business funding, or cash incentives under the expanded plan.

Government Advances on Security and Technology

Switching to matters of national security, the PS announced that the government is preparing to launch a new mobile application that will allow citizens to report road incidents and other related issues in real-time.

“We are finalizing the development of a mobile app that will make it easier for Kenyans to report incidents directly online, especially those involving road safety and traffic matters,” Omollo said.

He also noted that the government has made notable progress in police modernization and the integration of digital technology in law enforcement. “Most police stations still rely on traditional Occurrence Books (OBs), but we are now moving to a Digital OB system.

This new system will improve transparency, reduce case manipulation, and ensure better accountability in police operations,” he added.

Through these initiatives — from job creation to digital innovation — the government aims to not only empower the youth but also strengthen public safety and restore confidence in public institutions.
