I Will Quit ODM if Matiang’i Says So, Senator Declares

Kisii Senator Says He May Leave ODM if Matiang’i Advises

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has indicated that he might seriously consider leaving the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) if doing so would improve his chances of winning a seat in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a morning show on NTV on Monday, October 10, Onyonka stated that his support for Fred Matiang’i’s potential 2027 presidential bid could influence his political decisions, even if it means he has to join the Jubilee Party on Matiang’i’s advice.

Onyonka explained that his history of moving between political parties has allowed him to survive and thrive in Kenya’s dynamic political landscape.

“I have a lot of respect for ODM, but if I see that my chances of winning are better with the Jubilee Party, I will consider moving there.

I have been following Fred Matiang’i’s leadership closely, and if he advises me to join Jubilee, I will seriously consider it. If he doesn’t, I will remain in ODM,” Onyonka said.

He added, “If ODM decides to form a coalition with the opposition, I will also be comfortable with that. I have never won a seat by sticking to one party; I have always moved strategically between parties depending on the circumstances.”

Onyonka also reflected on the passing of ODM leader Raila Odinga, saying that it has prompted political leaders, especially within ODM, to rethink their strategies and find ways to stay relevant in Kenya’s political arena.

However, the senator made it clear that aligning with President William Ruto is not an option for him.

“I am willing to listen to him [Matiang’i] and may end up supporting his views, but I will not join the president. I am not criticizing the government with the intention of eventually joining it.

Even if my own mother were involved with him, I would discourage her from supporting him,” Onyonka said.

The senator also addressed his views on other opposition figures. While he does not fully agree with the political style of some leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, he emphasized that he will continue supporting them.

This is particularly because they refused to join the Kenya Kwanza coalition despite pressure.

Onyonka expressed optimism about former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s decision to appoint Matiang’i as Jubilee’s deputy party leader, noting that it could greatly enhance Matiang’i’s prospects of winning the presidency in 2027.

“What has impressed me is how Kalonzo Musyoka has maintained his stance firmly. And when it comes to Gachagua, even though many of us may not agree with his style, he is doing the work of holding the government accountable.

His style may not be liked by everyone, but he has a large following who appreciate his approach,” the senator explained.
