NPS Shifts Venue for Nairobi Police Recruitment Drive

NPS Changes Venue for Nairobi Police Recruitment Exercise

The National Police Service (NPS) has slightly adjusted the venue for one of its Nairobi recruitment centres ahead of the exercise set to resume on Monday, November 17. The change affects candidates registered under Centre No. 408 in Kamukunji Sub-County.

In a notice released on Sunday, NPS announced that all applicants assigned to this centre should now report to Morisson Primary School.

This new location replaces the earlier venue, the Kamukunji Sports Grounds, which had initially been planned for the exercise.

According to the police service, construction activities currently taking place at the sports grounds have made the area unsuitable and unsafe for hosting the recruitment.

The NPS explained that the original ground, which is about two kilometres away from the replacement venue, could not meet the required standards due to the ongoing works.

As of Sunday, all other recruitment centres across the country remain unchanged, and the process will proceed as scheduled from 8am to 5pm.

The plan to hire new police officers was first made public on October 31 through a widely circulated advert by the NPS.

However, the recruitment faced a temporary halt after activist Eliud Matindi filed a petition challenging its legality. Conservatory orders were issued at the time, stopping the process from moving forward.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja later cautioned that delaying the exercise any further would affect national security and slow efforts to boost the police workforce.

The conservatory orders were eventually lifted by Justice Bahati Mwamuye, allowing the NPS to continue with the exercise starting November 17.

For several years, the police service has been unable to conduct regular recruitment due to budget limitations, which has contributed to staffing shortages across the country.

This year’s drive is therefore seen as a key opportunity to strengthen police numbers and improve service delivery.

Applicants taking part in the upcoming recruitment will need to meet several minimum requirements. They must be Kenyan citizens aged between 18 and 28 years, possess a valid national ID card, and have scored at least a D+ in their KCSE, including a D+ in English or Kiswahili.

Candidates must also be physically and medically fit, with minimum height requirements set at 5 feet 8 inches for men and 5 feet 3 inches for women. Female applicants must not be pregnant during the recruitment or training period.

Those with felony convictions or ongoing criminal cases will not qualify for the exercise. On the other hand, National Youth Service (NYS) graduates who satisfy the necessary conditions are encouraged to participate.

IG Kanja has confirmed that the recruitment will be conducted in a single day and will take place at 427 designated centres across the country, marking one of the largest coordinated efforts to boost police numbers in recent years.
