FKF Issues Plea to Govt After Kenya’s Humiliating 8-0 Loss to Senegal

FKF Calls for Government Support After Kenya’s Heavy 8–0 Defeat to Senegal

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President, Hussein Mohammed, has appealed to the government for stronger support after the Harambee Stars suffered a humiliating 8–0 loss to Senegal in a friendly match on Tuesday, November 18.

In a detailed statement released shortly after the game, Mohammed said the defeat should serve as a serious reminder that Kenyan football still faces deep structural problems.

He explained that although the national team has shown progress in recent months, the heavy loss proved that much more needs to be done for Kenya to compete with top football nations.

Mohammed noted that Senegal, currently ranked 18th globally in the latest FIFA rankings and considered favourites for the 2025 AFCON title, showcased the level Kenya must reach.

He stressed that success requires consistent and intentional investment, especially in technical staff, training systems, and long-term player development.

“The results from today’s matches are a major wake-up call for all of us. Competing with the best in the world demands serious investment in a professional technical team and proper player development programmes,” Mohammed stated.

He went on to apologise to fans for what has become one of the worst defeats in the history of the national team.

Mohammed assured the public that FKF will introduce several corrective measures, including reviewing internal policies, strengthening operations, and tightening performance standards across all levels of football management.

In a subtle but firm message, Mohammed also hinted that national team staff will undergo scrutiny, with new performance indicators being applied from grassroots football all the way up to the senior team.

The heavy defeat came during a difficult international break for Kenya, following a narrow 1–0 loss to Equatorial Guinea just three days earlier.

These results have increased pressure on head coach Benni McCarthy. Despite having impressed during CHAN 2024, McCarthy has faced inconsistent results since taking charge.

It was also noted that Kenya fielded a young and relatively inexperienced squad in the Senegal match. Among the promising players was Aldrine Kibet, who is currently developing his career with Celta Vigo in Spain’s La Liga.

Meanwhile, Senegal used a near full-strength side as they prepared for the upcoming AFCON tournament scheduled from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

Kenya’s tough evening was made worse by another disappointing outcome earlier in the day, where the Under-17 team was held to a 1–1 draw by Somalia.

Mohammed said these results highlight deeper, long-standing issues in youth development that must be addressed urgently if Kenya hopes to improve its future performances.
