Breaking: DCI Boss Amin Elected to Top Interpol Role

The Director General of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Amin Mohammed, has been elected to serve on the Interpol Executive Committee.

This appointment came during the Interpol General Assembly held in Morocco on Thursday, where Amin was chosen to represent both Kenya and the African continent as the regional delegate.

He will serve a three-year term alongside Issam Fetoui from Tunisia, who was also elected to the committee.

The National Police Service (NPS), under which the DCI operates, welcomed the news, stating that Amin’s election reflects the confidence that Interpol member countries have in Kenya’s commitment to promoting security both regionally and globally.

According to NPS, the appointment underscores Kenya’s vision for a safe and resilient Africa—one that fosters innovation, builds strong partnerships, and enhances collaboration to combat cybercrime, terrorism, illicit trafficking, financial crimes, and offences targeting women and children.

Upon accepting the position, Amin, who began his career in the police as a Cadet Inspector in 1989 and gradually rose through the ranks, expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for nominating him.

He acknowledged the trust placed in him to represent both Kenya and Africa on such a crucial global security platform.

“I am deeply honoured to serve as Africa’s Delegate to the INTERPOL Executive Committee,” Amin said. “This opportunity reflects Kenya’s strong commitment to international policing and highlights the importance of partnerships across our regions.

I will continue to advocate for the necessary tools, resources, and cooperation required to dismantle criminal networks and protect the rights and lives of those who rely on our services the most.”

In his new role, Amin intends to use his position to amplify Africa’s voice and priorities within Interpol. His focus will include promoting technology-driven policing, enhancing joint operations among member countries, and strengthening efforts to fight human trafficking and child exploitation.

Kenya’s security leadership already plays a significant role on the continental stage. Inspector General Douglas Kanja currently serves as President of the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation (AFRIPOL), a body created under the African Union to improve collaboration among African police agencies.

AFRIPOL focuses on tackling transnational organized crime and cybercrime across Africa. As head of the organisation, Kanja oversees strategic planning and fosters cooperation among African Union member states to reinforce security on the continent.

Meanwhile, during the Interpol elections, Lucas Philippe from France was elected President of Interpol for a four-year term, while Wang Yong from China was appointed Vice-President for Asia with a three-year mandate.

Additionally, Kazumi Ogasawara from Japan was elected as Delegate for Asia, and Stefano Carvelli from Italy was chosen as Delegate for Europe.

Amin’s election to this prestigious international position marks a major milestone for Kenya, highlighting the country’s growing influence in global policing and its commitment to combating crime both at home and across the African continent.
