Mosiria Pushes for Removal of Coffin Shops from Hospital Entrances

Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, is calling for coffin shops to be moved away from the entrances and directly opposite sides of hospitals.

His message was shared on December 2, 2025, through a statement posted on various social media platforms, where he also included a video of himself speaking with coffin makers.

Mosiria explained that while he respects the coffin business, he believes their current placement near hospitals can negatively affect patients.

According to him, seeing coffins while entering a hospital—especially for people who are already in critical condition—can create unnecessary fear, emotional distress, and even a sense of hopelessness.

He appealed for a balanced approach that respects both the dignity of the coffin trade and the emotional well-being of hospital patients.

Mosiria emphasized that his request is not meant to undermine or criticize coffin sellers, but to protect vulnerable patients who may interpret the sight of coffins as a sign of impending death.

At the same time, Mosiria praised Kenyans working in the coffin industry. He described them as people doing God’s work with care, compassion, and deep respect for those who have passed away.

He noted that many people unfairly judge coffin makers, yet their role is essential, especially because they support families during their toughest and most painful moments of grief.

He acknowledged the important role coffin sellers play, saying they walk closely with bereaved families, offering support when it’s needed most. For that reason, he believes they deserve gratitude and respect rather than criticism.

The coffin industry in Kenya continues to expand, operating as a vital part of the country’s funeral service sector.

The business includes both established funeral homes and many small to medium-sized workshops across the country, showing how deeply rooted and dynamic the sector has become over the years.
