Gachagua Criticizes Citizen TV’s Stephen Letoo Over Alleged Biased Reporting
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has openly criticized the media, accusing several outlets of deliberately misreporting events and spreading false information following his recent public address.
Speaking on Wednesday, December 3, during a celebration and unveiling of newly elected Members of County Assembly (MCAs), Gachagua singled out Citizen TV reporter Stephen Letoo, claiming that his report was biased and inaccurate.
Gachagua referred to media coverage following his speech at a Thanksgiving ceremony for the newly elected MCA of Kariobangi North on Sunday, November 30.
“Stephen Letoo filed a very biased report on Sunday. And you were personally there. Criminals attacked us in the church and were driven away by church members,” he said. “Then they returned, backed by police, armed with guns, and continued the attack.
The OCS even threw a teargas canister inside the church. Yet Letoo reported that the police were simply there to separate fighting gangs. That is completely false,” Gachagua added.
He clarified that during his speech on November 30, he had outlined that his party, the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), was confident about winning top positions in Nairobi, including 16 out of 17 parliamentary seats and up to 90 percent of MCA seats. However, he accused the media of misrepresenting his statements.
“I want to urge the media to be responsible and stop showing open bias. On Sunday, I said that DCP is in talks with Wiper and other opposition parties.
Considering past voting patterns and party loyalty in Nairobi, the opposition has a real chance of taking 16 out of 17 parliamentary seats,” he explained.
Gachagua emphasized that his reference to seats in Nairobi was meant for the united opposition as a whole, with DCP being one of its key members, and accused some media outlets of twisting his words to suit political narratives.
He also condemned claims suggesting that all DCP candidates in Nairobi would be from the Kikuyu community. “Our group is Kenyan, just like any other, and every Kenyan deserves representation,” he said.
Addressing speculation about potential divisions within the opposition, Gachagua assured that the united opposition remains strong and cannot be divided. He stressed that a strong opposition relies on strong political parties and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening DCP in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya.
“We are strong partners. Let no one suggest that promoting my party is a political crime. Supporting my party is my responsibility,” he stated.
Earlier, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka dismissed claims that DCP and Wiper had reached an agreement for Wiper to withdraw its candidates from major Nairobi constituencies. Kalonzo accused the media of spreading falsehoods to create friction within the opposition.
“Stop this propaganda suggesting Wiper has left all Nairobi seats for DCP. They are trying everything to create tensions between us,” Kalonzo said at an event on November 30.
Gachagua concluded by promising that DCP party nominations would be transparent, fair, and inclusive, ensuring that all candidates, regardless of their region, have an equal opportunity to participate.
