Kenya Met Issues Five-Day Weather Forecast: Several Regions to Receive Rain

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a new five-day weather advisory showing that several parts of the country will receive rainfall between December 6 and December 9.

According to the forecast released on Friday, December 5, areas within the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Northeastern region, and the South-eastern lowlands will experience moderate to heavy rain during the period.

Although much of the country is expected to remain dry and sunny, the highlighted regions should prepare for wet conditions, cloudy mornings, and occasional showers.

Rainfall Expected in Highlands East of the Rift Valley

Kenya Met predicts that several counties in the Highland East region will receive moderate afternoon rains after cloudy mornings. These counties include:

  • Nyandarua
  • Laikipia
  • Nyeri
  • Kirinyaga
  • Murang’a
  • Kiambu
  • Meru
  • Embu
  • Tharaka Nithi
  • Nairobi

The weatherman explains that residents should expect light morning showers, followed by breaks of sunshine, and then more rain later in the day. This changing pattern is expected to continue throughout the forecast period.

Rainfall in the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley

Counties in the western and Rift Valley regions will also receive rain over the next few days. These include:

  • Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira
  • Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, and Bomet
  • Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot

These areas are expected to experience a mix of cloudiness, afternoon showers, and sunny intervals. Kenya Met notes that some counties may record heavier rainfall compared to others depending on local conditions.

South-eastern Lowlands and Eastern Kenya

Light showers are also expected between Sunday, December 7, and Tuesday, December 9 in parts of:

  • Kitui
  • Makueni
  • Machakos
  • Kajiado
  • Taita Taveta
  • Inland areas of Tana River County

For these counties, the remaining days of the forecast period will mainly be cloudy with minimal chances of rain.

Coastal and Northern Regions to Stay Mostly Sunny

The rest of the country—especially the coastal belt—will remain dry, hot, and sunny. Counties expected to experience these stable conditions include:

  • Mombasa
  • Kilifi
  • Lamu
  • Kwale

These regions will enjoy largely clear skies with no significant rainfall expected.

Temperature Advisory

Alongside rainfall predictions, Kenya Met has also issued an important temperature alert.

Cold Nights in Central Kenya and Nairobi

Residents living in:

  • Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi

have been advised to prepare for very cold nights.
Night temperatures in these counties may drop to as low as 5°C, which is unusually cold for this time of the year. The department encourages residents to keep warm, especially vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions.

Extremely Hot Daytime Temperatures in the North and Coast

Meanwhile, daytime temperatures are expected to rise sharply in North-western Kenya and some parts of the Coast.

  • Northern counties may record temperatures of up to 37°C
  • Coastal counties may experience highs of around 33°C

Kenya Met advises residents in these areas to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
