Dramatic Scene in Kware as Phone Snatcher Jumps Into Sewer to Escape Angry Mob
In a dramatic and tense moment captured on video circulating widely on social media, an alleged phone snatcher in Kware, a neighbourhood in Embakasi, Nairobi, was seen making a desperate bid to escape an angry crowd by leaping into a drainage channel full of water and sewage.
According to multiple video clips and eyewitness posts shared on Facebook and Instagram, the incident unfolded after the suspected thief was allegedly caught in the act of snatching a mobile phone from a resident. As bystanders realised what had happened, a crowd quickly formed and began chasing the suspect.
The footage shows the man running along a narrow path before, in a bid to evade the advancing crowd, he jumped into what appears to be a sewer or drainage channel connected to the Nairobi River. Some clips describe the channel as filthy and full of water, suggesting the escape was both dangerous and unhygienic.
Angry residents in the videos can be heard throwing stones and shouting as they pursue the suspect, clearly intent on stopping him from getting away.
The suspect’s jump into the water drew gasps from some onlookers, while others continued to shout and urge those nearby to help restrain him.
So far, there has been no confirmation from the National Police Service (NPS), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), or any major Kenyan newsroom regarding injuries, arrest details, or the outcome of the incident.
It is also not clear whether the suspect was eventually apprehended after his leap into the sewer. Because this information comes solely from social media shared clips, some details may be unverified or incomplete.
