Jalang’o Declares Bid to Challenge Sifuna for Nairobi Seat

Jalang’o Announces Plan to Challenge Edwin Sifuna for Nairobi Senate Seat in 2027

Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, widely known as Jalang’o, has officially declared that he intends to contest for the Nairobi Senate seat in the 2027 General Election.

His announcement signals the beginning of what could become a highly competitive political contest in the capital, especially considering the position is currently held by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.

Jalang’o, who won the Lang’ata parliamentary seat during the 2022 elections under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, made his intentions public during an interview on Radio 47 on Tuesday.

The lawmaker’s statement has immediately attracted political attention, with analysts viewing it as an early sign of shifting alliances and preparations ahead of the next general election cycle.

His declaration comes amid increasing speculation surrounding his recent political movements. In recent weeks, Jalang’o has been seen attending several public events alongside Lands Principal Secretary Nixon Korir, who previously served as Lang’ata MP, as well as South C Ward MCA Abass Khalif.

Khalif has already announced his plans to run for the Lang’ata parliamentary seat, a move that has further fueled discussions about Jalang’o’s possible transition from his current role to a county-wide political position.

These public appearances raised questions among political observers, with many interpreting them as part of early political realignments ahead of 2027.

When asked whether these engagements suggested that he was preparing to leave his current parliamentary seat, Jalang’o confirmed that he is indeed considering a larger political role and believes he is ready to represent Nairobi residents at the Senate level.

The MP stated that there are no legal or political barriers preventing him from contesting for the Senate seat. He explained that his experience as a public figure, combined with his interactions with people across different parts of the country, has helped him better understand the challenges facing ordinary citizens.

According to him, this exposure has equipped him with the knowledge and leadership experience necessary to serve Nairobi effectively. Jalang’o added that he is fully prepared for the political contest ahead and remains confident in his ability to compete for the position.

If his announcement is anything to go by, the race for the Nairobi Senate seat is likely to reshape political dynamics within the city.

Edwin Sifuna, who currently holds the seat and serves as ODM’s Secretary General, has in recent months faced growing political pressure, particularly due to internal disagreements within the party.

The emerging competition could further intensify political debate within ODM as leaders position themselves ahead of the elections.

The developments come shortly after fresh tensions emerged within the ODM leadership. Last week, ODM party leader Oburu Odinga publicly criticized Sifuna following remarks the Secretary General made questioning the legitimacy of certain party leadership positions.

In a strongly worded response issued on Friday, Oburu accused Sifuna of making contradictory statements and reminded party members that no individual should place themselves above the party’s structures and decisions.

Oburu further argued that Sifuna had, on several occasions, failed to clearly separate his personal opinions from official party positions, which he said had caused confusion among party supporters and members.

The Siaya Senator maintained that all current ODM officials are serving legitimately, adding that their positions are backed by resolutions made through the party’s official organs.

Despite the criticism, Sifuna has continued to stand by his earlier remarks and has appeared unwilling to soften his stance.

He has maintained his opposition to ODM’s perceived cooperation with President William Ruto’s government and has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of stepping down from his role as the party’s Secretary General.

With more than a year before the official campaign season begins, Jalang’o’s announcement has already sparked political debate in Nairobi, setting the stage for what could become one of the most closely watched Senate races in the 2027 elections.
