BREAKING NEWS: Sifuna Removed as ODM Secretary General

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been removed from his position as the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), marking a significant leadership change within the party.

The decision was confirmed by the party’s senior leadership following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday, February 11, where members deliberated on internal party matters and leadership conduct.

In a statement released after the meeting, the NEC expressed concern about what it described as increasing cases of indiscipline within the party, particularly among senior officials.

According to the committee, ODM operates under a clear constitutional framework that emphasizes respect for the rule of law, collective responsibility, and decision-making through established party organs.

The leadership stated that maintaining order and unity within the party remains a priority as ODM navigates ongoing internal challenges.

After reviewing issues related to Sifuna’s conduct and role within the party, the NEC resolved that he be removed from the position of Secretary General with immediate effect.

The decision effectively brings an end to his tenure in one of the most influential offices within ODM, a role that involves coordinating party activities, communication, and administration at the national level.

Following his removal, Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omayo, who had previously been serving as the party’s Deputy Secretary General in an acting capacity, has now assumed the responsibilities of the Secretary General.

Her appointment is expected to ensure continuity in the party’s operations as ODM reorganizes its leadership structure.

Political observers had already noted early signs that changes were likely, as Sifuna did not attend the NEC meeting where the decision was made.

His absence, alongside that of Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi, had fuelled speculation about internal disagreements and possible leadership shifts within the party ahead of the meeting.

The latest development comes at a time when ODM has been experiencing internal debates and political tensions, with different factions expressing varying views on the party’s direction and leadership style.

The removal of Sifuna is therefore seen by many as part of broader efforts by the party leadership to restore discipline and strengthen unity as it prepares for upcoming political engagements.
