University Suspends Students After Viral Fight at MMUST

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has taken disciplinary action against several students after a shocking video showing a violent fight inside a lecture hall spread widely online.

The incident is reported to have happened on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, during an afternoon class session.

What began as a normal lecture quickly turned chaotic when a group of students became involved in a physical confrontation. The situation escalated rapidly, disrupting the class and leaving many students confused and alarmed.

In the viral video that has since circulated across social media, two students are clearly seen attacking their fellow classmates in a packed lecture hall.

The victims appeared unable to defend themselves as they were overpowered and beaten in front of other students.

Many of those present seemed shocked, with some frozen in place and unsure how to respond to the sudden outbreak of violence.

One detail that has drawn significant public attention is the reaction of the lecturer who was present during the incident. The lecturer is seen standing near the whiteboard holding papers, appearing hesitant or unable to step in as the fight unfolded.

This has raised serious questions among Kenyans about the role of staff and students in responding to such emergencies and whether more could have been done to stop the violence sooner.

The situation reportedly went on for several minutes before calm was finally restored. After the fight ended, the injured students were assisted out of the lecture hall to receive first aid, while the rest of the class tried to process what had just happened.

Following the incident, the university administration moved quickly to address the matter. The Vice Chancellor, Solomon Shibairo, confirmed on Friday, March 27, that those involved had been identified and action taken against them.

According to the university, statements were recorded from all parties involved, including the victims, the alleged attackers, the lecturer, and the class representative.

Based on the findings and in line with the institution’s student regulations, four students were suspended. The administration emphasized that the disciplinary measures were necessary to uphold order and maintain the integrity of the university environment.

In an official statement, the university strongly condemned the incident, describing it as an act of violence and indiscipline that goes against the core values of higher learning institutions.

The Vice Chancellor urged students to remain calm, respect one another, and follow the rules put in place to ensure safety and harmony within the campus.

Despite the swift response, the incident has raised wider concerns about safety at the university. Reports suggest that this is not an isolated case, as there appears to be an increase in student-related violence at the institution in recent weeks.

In a separate and equally disturbing incident, another video has surfaced showing a student being attacked by a group of individuals armed with machetes and sticks near the Vice Chancellor’s office.

This attack is believed to have taken place about a week earlier, during the student election period—a time that is often marked by heightened tensions on campus.

Unlike the recent classroom incident, this earlier attack was reportedly handled quietly, with little public communication or visible action taken at the time.

The emergence of the video has now sparked fresh concerns among students and the public, with many questioning how such serious incidents are being managed.

These back-to-back cases have intensified the conversation around student safety, discipline, and conflict management within universities.

Many are now calling on the institution to strengthen security measures, improve response systems, and ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.
