A Kenya Power officer has been seriously injured after being attacked while carrying out his duties in Isiolo County, in an incident that has once again raised concern over the safety of field staff.
According to the company, the employee, who works as a meter reader, was attacked on Thursday, April 9, while on official duty in Isiolo.
The injuries he suffered were severe, forcing the company to arrange an emergency airlift to Nairobi, where he is now receiving specialised medical care.
Kenya Power confirmed the incident and said the officer was moved to the capital the same afternoon so he could access advanced treatment.
In a statement released after the incident, Kenya Power strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a criminal act that should not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The company said assaults on its workers not only put lives at risk but also interfere with the delivery of essential services to customers across the country.
It stressed that the injured officer had been lawfully performing his duties when the attack happened, making the incident even more disturbing.
The utility firm also revealed that this is not an isolated case. Over the years, several of its officers and contractors have reportedly faced violence while working in different parts of the country.
Many of these incidents happen when staff are disconnecting illegal electricity connections, following up on unpaid bills, or conducting routine inspections such as meter reading.
Such operations sometimes attract hostility from affected individuals, exposing employees to serious danger in the line of duty.
Kenya Power said the latest matter has already been reported to the relevant security authorities, and investigations are now underway to establish who was behind the assault and what exactly led to the attack.
The company further appealed to members of the public to cooperate with and support its workforce, noting that its teams work under difficult conditions to ensure homes and businesses continue receiving reliable electricity services.
This latest incident adds to a worrying pattern of attacks targeting Kenya Power staff. In previous cases, courts have handed down stiff punishments, including a 20-year prison sentence for a man who shot a Kenya Power employee with an arrow.
Another widely discussed case happened in 2023 when Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai was accused of assaulting a Kenya Power technician during an operation in his constituency.
That 2023 incident shocked many Kenyans after CCTV footage emerged showing the technician clinging dangerously to an electric pole while pleading for mercy.
The worker appeared visibly shaken and nearly lost his grip during the confrontation, a moment that highlighted the life-threatening risks Kenya Power employees often face while serving the public.
The attack in Isiolo now renews the conversation around the security of frontline utility workers, with many calling for stronger protection measures for officers who are regularly deployed to enforce electricity regulations and maintain safe power distribution systems across Kenya.
