IEBC Issues Notice to Kenyans Locked Out of Continuous Voter Registration Drive

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has assured Kenyans who were unable to register during the recently concluded voter registration exercise that they still have another chance to do so.

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 28, Erastus Ethekon explained that citizens who missed the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise should not worry, as voter registration services are still available even after the official exercise ended.

He said the commission has already set aside several locations where Kenyans can continue registering as voters as preparations for the 2027 Kenyan General Election continue.

According to the commission, voter registration will remain open at all Huduma Centres across the country, at various IEBC constituency offices, and also at the IEBC Customer Experience Centre located at Anniversary Towers.

The clarification came shortly after the commission officially ended the 30-day Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration exercise, which had been running from March 28 to April 28.

During that period, the commission successfully registered more than 1.87 million new voters. Although this was seen as a strong turnout, the number was slightly below the commission’s target of 2 million new registrations.

The Nairobi region recorded the highest number of new voters with 209,965 registrations. It was followed by Kiambu County with 97,557, Nakuru County with 81,166, and Kakamega County with 80,711 new voters.

On the other hand, some counties recorded lower registration numbers. These included Lamu County with 8,345 voters, Isiolo County with 9,291, Mandera County with 14,946, and Nyandarua County with 16,604 new registrations.

Many Kenyans had taken to social media to complain that they were locked out after the exercise ended, which pushed the commission to release a public clarification and guide citizens on where they can still register.

The commission now hopes to register at least 6 million additional voters before the 2027 elections. This would raise the total number of registered voters in the country from the current 22 million to around 28 million.

Another issue affecting the process is the growing number of uncollected national ID cards. This has raised fears that many young and eligible Kenyans may fail to register as voters and miss the opportunity to take part in the next general election.
