Veteran Gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka Dies at 83 After Decades of Service in Kenya’s Medical Field

Veteran gynaecologist and longtime director at The Nairobi Hospital, Dr Job Obwaka, has died at the age of 83, bringing to an end a medical career that lasted for more than fifty years.

His passing marks the loss of one of Kenya’s most experienced and respected doctors, whose work in the healthcare sector touched the lives of many patients and medical professionals across the country.

According to his family, Dr Obwaka died on the evening of Friday, May 1, at around 7pm after he was rushed to The Nairobi Hospital while unconscious.

Sources at the hospital said doctors attempted to attend to him immediately after his arrival, but he was sadly pronounced dead shortly after reaching the facility.

The news of his death has shocked many people, especially within the medical fraternity, where he had built a strong reputation over several decades.

Dr Obwaka spent much of his life serving patients at the same hospital where he later passed away. Throughout his long career, he not only worked as a senior doctor but also held important leadership positions at the institution.

Colleagues describe him as a committed medical practitioner who dedicated his life to improving healthcare services and mentoring younger professionals in the field of medicine.

His death comes only a few weeks after he was arrested in a case that attracted nationwide attention and triggered heated discussions within Kenya’s healthcare sector.

The matter raised fresh concerns and questions surrounding the management and operations of one of the country’s leading private hospitals.

The case also placed Dr Obwaka at the centre of public attention, something that many people said was unusual considering his long-standing medical career and public image.

Reports indicate that Dr Obwaka’s health started deteriorating in mid-March after he collapsed at the Milimani Law Courts while waiting to be arraigned.

The dramatic incident caused panic among those present at the court premises as medical personnel quickly moved in to assist him.

He was later rushed by ambulance to the intensive care unit at The Nairobi Hospital, where he remained under specialised treatment for several weeks.

Since his admission, there had been growing concern about his condition, with close friends, colleagues, and family members hoping for his recovery.

However, despite continued medical care, his health reportedly remained fragile in the weeks leading to his death.

Dr Obwaka’s passing now leaves behind renewed public interest in the case that had recently put him in the spotlight, while also drawing attention to his long and influential contribution to Kenya’s medical profession.

Many Kenyans are expected to remember him for his years of dedication to healthcare, his leadership at The Nairobi Hospital, and the impact he made in the field of gynaecology over the course of his distinguished career.
