Goons Disrupted Linda Mwananchi Rallies in Vihiga and Kisumu, One Suspect Allegedly Claims He Was Sent
Tensions were high during recent Linda Mwananchi rallies held in parts of Vihiga and Kisumu after groups of suspected disruptors were confronted by members of the public, leading to chaotic scenes, injuries, and arrests.
The incidents have now sparked fresh debate over allegations of organised political violence in Western Kenya.
In Vihiga County, especially around Mbale, reports indicate that groups of youths attempted to disrupt rally preparations and the event itself. The situation quickly escalated into running battles between the suspected disruptors and local residents who intervened.
Some of the individuals were overpowered and beaten during the confrontation, while others managed to escape the scene.
Witnesses claimed that one of the suspected disruptors who was captured allegedly admitted that the group had been sent to interfere with the rally.
According to these accounts, the individuals were coordinated and had specific instructions to cause confusion and scatter attendees. However, these claims remain part of the ongoing investigation and have not been formally detailed in a court proceeding.
Police later moved into the area and arrested several suspects linked to the chaos. Authorities also recovered crude weapons allegedly used during the clashes, including knives and other items.
Security officials said they had launched investigations to establish whether the disruption attempts were organised and who may have financed or coordinated the group.
Similar incidents were reported in Kisumu, where rally-related convoys and gatherings were allegedly targeted by groups described by organisers as hired goons.
The disruptions caused panic among supporters and briefly interrupted political activity in the area. Leaders linked to the rally accused rival political interests of attempting to sabotage their events, though no direct evidence has been publicly presented.
Security agencies have maintained that investigations are ongoing to determine the full network behind the violence. Officials have also warned against spreading politically motivated violence, saying that anyone found responsible will face prosecution.
The incidents have added to growing political tension in parts of Western Kenya, where rallies and public gatherings have increasingly been accompanied by claims of organised disruption attempts and counter-accusations between rival camps.
As investigations continue, both residents and political leaders are calling for calm and urging security agencies to take firm action to prevent further violence during political activities in the region.
