Khalwale Hits Back at Ruto Over SHA Crisis, Claims He Was Punished for Speaking Out
A fresh political storm is brewing after Boni Khalwale launched a sharp attack on President William Ruto, accusing him of sidelining leaders who warned early about the failure of the country’s new healthcare system, the Social Health Authority (SHA).
Speaking amid growing public frustration over healthcare access, Khalwale claimed he had raised concerns about SHA long before its rollout problems became visible.
According to the outspoken senator, his criticism did not sit well within government circles, leading to what he described as political punishment.
“You sacked me because I told you SHA wasn’t working,” Khalwale reportedly said, in remarks that have since spread widely across social media and political platforms.
Mounting Pressure Over SHA Performance
The SHA system, introduced to replace the defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), was meant to usher in a new era of universal healthcare in Kenya. However, months into its implementation, the system has faced serious criticism from both leaders and ordinary citizens.
Hospitals across the country have raised concerns about delayed payments, forcing some facilities to scale down services. Patients, especially those from low-income households, have reported difficulties accessing treatment, despite being registered under the new scheme.
Khalwale has been among the most vocal critics, insisting that the system was rolled out prematurely without adequate testing or preparation. He argues that the government ignored early warnings, choosing instead to push forward with a flawed system.
Political Fallout Within Government Ranks
The senator’s remarks highlight growing cracks within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, where internal disagreements are increasingly playing out in public. Khalwale, once a strong ally of President Ruto, now appears to be positioning himself as a key critic of the administration’s handling of healthcare reforms.
His claims of being “sacked” or politically sidelined point to deeper tensions behind the scenes, particularly over appointments and influence within government structures.
At the same time, Khalwale has not held back in calling for accountability, even daring the President to take action against senior officials linked to the SHA rollout, including those in the Ministry of Health.
Government Defends SHA Rollout
Despite the criticism, President Ruto’s administration continues to defend the new healthcare system, maintaining that SHA is still in a transition phase and will stabilize over time.
Government officials argue that reforms of this scale are bound to face challenges, especially during the shift from NHIF to a new framework. They insist that efforts are underway to address payment delays and improve system efficiency.
The administration has also emphasized its commitment to ensuring that millions of Kenyans, particularly the vulnerable, can access affordable healthcare under the new model.
Kenyans Caught in the Middle
As the political battle intensifies, it is ordinary Kenyans who continue to bear the brunt of the ongoing challenges. For many families, access to healthcare remains uncertain, with confusion surrounding registration, coverage, and hospital acceptance of SHA.
The unfolding dispute between Khalwale and President Ruto now adds a political dimension to what is already a sensitive national issue.
With pressure mounting, all eyes are on the government to not only respond to critics but also deliver a healthcare system that works effectively for every Kenyan.
