You are now required to update your Kenya Power token meter by August to access electricity

Kenya Power has issued a directive requiring customers on its prepaid power plan to update their meters, known as token meters, by August to maintain uninterrupted access to electricity.

The initiative is part of a global update aimed at enhancing the security of prepaid meters that utilize the Standard Transfer Specification (STS) system.

Kenya Power’s Managing Director, Joseph Siror, stated on Wednesday that the update targets a total of 7.4 million prepaid meters.

“All prepaid meters that will not have been updated by the deadline will stop accepting the tokens after the deadline date,” Siror emphasized, highlighting the importance of the update for uninterrupted service.

The power provider will send customers two codes via SMS when they purchase electricity tokens. “Customers will need to enter these codes into their meters by following the steps provided in the SMS before loading the new token,” explained Dr. Siror.

Additionally, for customers who haven’t purchased tokens, Kenya Power will send the necessary codes directly to prompt the meter update. “The process is straightforward and free of charge,” he added.

Kenya Power assured that the update will not affect existing tokens already loaded into meters. However, customers are advised to use any previously purchased tokens before updating their meters, as failure to do so will invalidate the unused power units.

The directive underscores the critical need for customers to comply with the update to avoid any disruption in their electricity supply.
