Kenyans who have reached the age of 25 and are living with their parents would be required to for their own medical cover Such citizens will be recognised as a separate household even if they would still be under the shelter and care of their parent This comes a few days after the government unveiled a scheme to ensure that inmates in prison pay taxes

Unemployed Kenyans who have attained 25 years of age will have to pay their own medical insurance under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

What does govt say about SHIF

The new medical insurance fund requires that anyone who has attained the age of 25 and is still living under their parent’s roof shall be treated as a separate household from that of the parents.

According to the drafters of SHIF, this proposal would also apply to people who are not employed but have reached the specified age.

“A person who has attained the age of 25 years and has no income of his or her own or is living with the contributor shall be treated as a household separate from the contributor,” the statement read in part.

The proposal states that these individuals will be required to pay KSh 300 every month.

Kenyan inmates to pay tax

Earlier, the government announced each prisoner will have the opportunity to work and pay taxes as the government collaborates with relevant stakeholders, including the Chandaria Foundation’s programme, to launch development projects in prisons. These projects include building bakeries and improving existing workshops, among other income-generating activities in correctional facilities nationwide.

Although the amount of funding for this plan has not been announced, Correctional Services PS Salome Beacco stated that the government has defined eight pillars to ensure that offenders acquire training and work experience before reintegrating into society once their sentences are completed.

These pillars include revitalising prison farms to promote agriculture, establishing industries, various educational institutions, the housing construction sector, roads, the environment, the legal department, and electronic revenue collection, among others. The government is currently establishing bakeries in prisons in Kisumu, Mombasa, Meru, Nyeri, and Eldoret.
