Haiti Gang Leader Blames Politicians and Elites for Gang Violence

The recent statements by Haiti’s notorious gang leader, Jimmy Cherizier, also known as Barbecue, have drawn significant attention and concern. In a video that has gone viral, Cherizier accused certain Haitian politicians and economic elites of sponsoring and equipping gang operations within the country. His claims suggest that these individuals are directly involved in exacerbating the violence in Haiti, particularly in working-class neighborhoods.

Cherizier, a former police officer turned gang leader, addressed the Haitian police, warning them to cease their pursuit of him and threatening to unleash terror in the Delmas area of Port-au-Prince. He explicitly mentioned that major clashes could occur soon, signaling a potential escalation of violence.

The backdrop to these threats includes the recent killing of three Haitian national police officers, an attack for which Cherizier has been blamed. The officers were ambushed, and their armored vehicle was set ablaze. This incident has heightened tensions and prompted a response from the Presidential Transition Council, which expressed condolences and concern over the escalating violence.

This isn’t the first time Cherizier has made such threats. In April, following the swearing-in of the presidential transitional council, he issued a stern warning to the new government, predicting a more intense conflict following their takeover from former Prime Minister Ariel Henry. The immediate aftermath of his threats saw an eruption of gunfire, underscoring the volatile and dangerous situation in Haiti.

Cherizier’s allegations point to a deeply entrenched problem in Haiti, where political and economic elites are purportedly complicit in the country’s ongoing instability. His statements and actions continue to challenge the authority of the Haitian government and the police, further complicating efforts to restore peace and security in the nation.
