Ruto speaking about ‘Murima’. Watch

Mount Kenya is experiencing political and economic challenges, contributing to tension in the region. Residents of the area, which overwhelmingly supported President William Ruto during the 2022 elections, are now facing dissatisfaction due to unmet campaign promises.

The high cost of living, including soaring food and fuel prices, is a primary concern.

Many locals feel that key issues like agricultural reforms, such as coffee and tea sector improvements, have not been fully addressed.

Farmers, for instance, are pushing for better returns on crops sold in foreign currencies, but progress remains slow.

President Ruto’s recent visits to the Mount Kenya region aim to reassure residents and launch infrastructure projects like roads, irrigation, and medical facilities.

However, some residents claim that many of these projects were initiated by the previous administration under Uhuru Kenyatta, and are only being rebranded rather than being new initiatives.

This has led to frustrations, with local leaders urging Ruto to focus on completing stalled projects and addressing the high cost of living

Another layer of complexity is the internal political rivalry between Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, both from Mount Kenya, which threatens the unity of the region.

While Gachagua has positioned himself as the region’s protector of interests, residents are watching closely to see how the government will address their grievances.
