Rigathi Gachagua, the former Deputy President of Kenya, made serious allegations against the Kenya Kwanza Government on Sunday, claiming that there is a well-organized plot to remove Chief Justice Martha Koome from her position ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking to congregants at Meru PCEA Church, Gachagua revealed that this move is part of a larger strategy to disband the Supreme Court before the upcoming elections.
According to Gachagua, President William Ruto is also involved in this scheme, with plans already set in motion, including the allocation of funds for the operation.
“There is a much bigger plot to dismantle the Supreme Court before the 2027 elections,” Gachagua stated.
“A budget has been earmarked for this, through the National Intelligence Service.” His remarks follow the recent controversy surrounding Chief Justice Koome’s security, which was initially withdrawn and then reinstated—a pattern that has raised concerns about the safety of senior judicial officers in Kenya.
Gachagua insinuated that the government’s actions against Koome were a deliberate attempt to pressure her into resigning, adding that the petitions currently being handled by the Supreme Court were orchestrated by the government to ensure that the judicial bench is more sympathetic to the ruling party’s interests.
“The petitions you see in the Supreme Court are part of the government’s agenda,” he explained. “They want to install judges who will align with their agenda.”
This comes at a time when Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen defended the government’s decision to withdraw Koome’s security, describing it as a routine procedure within the National Police Service (NPS).
The situation has also been compounded by a petition filed by former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi, calling for the removal of Koome and other Supreme Court judges due to alleged misconduct.
Despite these mounting pressures, Gachagua has urged Koome to remain steadfast and resist these attempts to remove her. He also called on the international community to intervene in defense of judicial independence in Kenya.
In addition to his comments about the judiciary, Gachagua’s political positioning has become clearer, especially following his announcement of a collaboration with NARC Kenya party leader Martha Karua.
The two, who were once political rivals with starkly different ideologies, were seen together recently at Karua’s home in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County.
This meeting marks a significant shift, with Gachagua and Karua seemingly reconciling after years of political criticism towards one another.
Through these developments, Gachagua seems to be strengthening his political alliances, positioning himself as a leader willing to challenge the current administration while forming new partnerships in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
