Protests Erupt Amid Plot to Impeach Wetangula

Bungoma Residents Protest Against Wetangula’s Impeachment Plot

Bungoma residents took to the streets on Tuesday to protest an alleged plan to impeach National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula.

The demonstrators, mostly boda boda riders and local supporters, marched through Bungoma Town carrying large placards and twigs as they voiced their anger over what they claimed was a politically motivated scheme led by opposition MPs.

The protesters accused the opposition of unfairly targeting Wetangula and questioned why President William Ruto had not intervened to shield him from the looming impeachment.

They reminded the President of the promise he made in 2022 when he visited Bungoma, where he assured the people that he would support Wetangula’s leadership in the National Assembly.

According to them, Wetangula played a crucial role in rallying support for Ruto in the region during the last general elections, and it would be a betrayal if he were to be removed from office.

As the demonstrations continued, traffic was disrupted along the Bungoma-Kisumu Highway, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

The peaceful protests went on for several hours as residents called on opposition leaders to respect Wetangula’s position and allow him to serve his term without interference.

The protests come just days after Starehe MP Amos Mwango issued a strong warning, threatening to file a motion of no confidence against Speaker Wetangula if he did not step down voluntarily.

Mwango, who spoke on February 11, accused Wetangula of making poor leadership decisions, which he argued had led to heavy criticism of the National Assembly. He pointed to last year’s revolt against the Finance Bill in June and July as an example of the Speaker’s alleged incompetence.

The Starehe MP further cited a recent High Court ruling that declared Wetangula’s dual role as Speaker and Ford-Kenya party leader unconstitutional. According to Mwango, this was a clear violation of the law, and he insisted that stepping down would be the most honorable course of action for Wetangula.

Adding to the pressure, a three-judge bench ruled against Wetangula’s controversial decision to declare Kenya Kwanza as the majority coalition in Parliament. The court found that the Speaker lacked legal justification for assigning the majority role to Ruto’s alliance and overturned his ruling, instead recognizing Azimio la Umoja as the rightful majority.

With tensions rising, it remains to be seen how Wetangula will navigate the political storm, as his supporters vow to defend him while his critics push for his removal.
