Ruto Allies Respond to Bishop Muheria’s Criticism

On Saturday, February 22, 2025, government officials aligned with President William Ruto’s administration took aim at Bishop Anthony Muheria, the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Nyeri, following his remarks criticizing the government for focusing too much on publicity instead of delivering on its promised projects.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi responded sharply to the Bishop, urging him to focus on his role and allow the government to handle its own matters, including publicity.

Wandayi emphasized that it is the government’s responsibility to inform the public about its development plans and accomplishments, making it clear that they would continue to do so without hesitation.

“We have an obligation to communicate our development plans to the public, and we will not shy away from sharing the work we are doing and what we have already achieved. This will continue, regardless of any opposition,” Opiyo Wandayi stated.

In a similar vein, Kipkeleon East Member of Parliament Joseph Cherorot suggested that Bishop Muheria should concentrate on issues affecting his local region and refrain from involving himself in political matters.

Alex Wachira, the Energy Principal Secretary, also weighed in, clarifying that the government is not engaged in unnecessary advertising. Instead, he pointed out that the government is simply listening to the needs of the people and working to meet them.

Baringo Women Representative Florence Jematia added her voice to the criticism, telling the Archbishop that his comments were misplaced. Jematia reminded Muheria that all governments around the world engage in public communication about their activities, and the Kenyan government is doing so as part of its constitutional duty, which includes public participation.

Earlier, on Friday, February 21, Bishop Muheria had criticized the government’s frequent public advertisements about its projects, calling for less talk and more action.

He argued that the government should focus less on promoting its plans and more on implementing tangible developments.

“There needs to be less rhetoric and more action. We don’t need constant advertisements about government plans.

The government is not an advertising agency; it should be an agency focused on actual implementation,” Bishop Muheria remarked.
