Breaking: Sudan Threatens Trade Ban on Kenya After Hosting Rebel RSF Group

The Sudanese government has issued a strong warning to Kenya, accusing it of interfering in Sudan’s internal affairs by hosting a meeting for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a rebel group currently engaged in a fierce battle with the Sudanese army for control of the country.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, February 24, Sudan’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Hussein Al Fadil, announced that Sudan is considering imposing strict economic measures against Kenya, including a potential ban on Kenyan imports from entering the Sudanese market.

Al Fadil further revealed that Sudan would officially lodge a complaint with the African Union (AU) and other top international organizations, urging them to take tough action against President William Ruto’s administration.

“This is due to Kenya’s interference in Sudan’s internal matters and its decision to host events for the terrorist RSF militia and its allies, who are working against Sudan’s security, stability, and unity,” Al Fadil stated.

He emphasized that the measures Sudan is preparing to take would be introduced gradually but could escalate over time, depending on Kenya’s actions. Among the possible measures, Sudan is considering an economic crackdown, including restrictions on trade with Kenya.

Sudan Accuses Kenya of Supporting RSF Rebels

According to Al Fadil, President Ruto and his government have consistently meddled in Sudan’s internal affairs and have provided support, directly or indirectly, to the RSF rebels since the conflict erupted in Sudan.

The Sudanese official went on to accuse President Ruto of having personal interests linked to RSF leader Mohammed Hamdan, describing Kenya’s involvement as “hostile and unacceptable.”

Al Fadil pointed out that Kenya’s actions go against international agreements and charters, including those of the United Nations, the African Union, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

“Kenya claims to be committed to finding a solution for Sudan’s crisis, yet it is hosting the very militias responsible for the ongoing war. This is not a peace initiative—it is a betrayal,” he remarked.

RSF’s Political Agreement in Nairobi Sparks Outrage

Al Fadil’s statements come just two days after RSF representatives signed a political agreement in Nairobi, which is expected to strengthen their influence in Sudan and give them control over key regions in the war-torn country.

President Ruto’s decision to allow the RSF to hold discussions in Kenya has faced backlash both locally and internationally. Critics argue that by welcoming the RSF, Ruto has taken sides in the Sudanese conflict rather than promoting peace.

Sudan’s War and Its Devastating Impact

The conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army has been ongoing since mid-2023, leading to massive destruction, loss of lives, and a humanitarian crisis. More than 30,000 people have been killed, while over 14 million others have been displaced due to the violence.

With tensions between Kenya and Sudan now escalating, it remains to be seen how the Kenyan government will respond to Sudan’s threats of economic retaliation and diplomatic action.
