Raila Breaks Silence on Matiang’i Bid for Presidency

Raila Speaks on Matiang’i’s Possible Presidential Bid

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has dismissed the possibility of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i winning the presidency, arguing that support from Kisii County alone would not be enough to secure victory.

Speaking on Thursday after meeting Kisii residents for a consultative discussion, Odinga emphasized that winning the presidency requires nationwide backing rather than support from a single community. He pointed out that unseating President William Ruto would be a tough challenge for Matiang’i.

“A person seeking the presidency cannot rely solely on votes from Kisii, Luo, Luhya, or even Mount Kenya. There is no such thing as a particular community producing a presidential candidate.

If you want to be elected, you must win the trust and support of Kenyans as a whole,” Odinga remarked.

The Azimio leader also clarified that he had not received any direct confirmation from Matiang’i regarding his intention to run for the top seat. He maintained that reports about the former CS’s presidential ambitions were purely speculative at this stage.

“This is a matter we will address when the right time comes. As of now, Matiang’i has not personally declared his interest in running for the presidency,” Odinga stated.

Aside from addressing Matiang’i’s rumored bid, Odinga also used the meeting to urge the government to resolve several pressing issues affecting Kenyans.

He criticized President Ruto’s administration for failing to properly address critical concerns such as the challenges facing the Social Health Authority (SHA).

He further accused the government of negligence, saying that corruption and mismanagement were key factors behind the country’s deteriorating service delivery.

“Our country is struggling because of a lack of proper leadership and failure to address crucial matters. Corruption remains a major issue, leading to the poor state of services in the country,” Odinga observed.

Odinga wrapped up his two-week series of consultative meetings on Thursday evening in Nairobi, where he engaged youth leaders and ODM county officials in discussions about his political future.

The former Prime Minister is now expected to make a highly anticipated announcement on his next political move, possibly starting from Friday, March 7.

Political analysts speculate that he might enter into a power-sharing agreement with President Ruto, a move that could significantly reshape Kenya’s political landscape.
