Residents of Nakuru County have taken a bold step by filing a petition with the county assembly, demanding an immediate investigation into the prolonged absence of Governor Susan Kihika.
The petition, which was submitted on Thursday afternoon, gives the county assembly a two-week deadline to provide a clear explanation regarding the governor’s continued absence from office.
Signed by more than 2,000 residents, the petition not only questions Kihika’s whereabouts but also calls for a thorough audit of all foreign trips undertaken by Nakuru County officials.
Additionally, the residents want updates on the ongoing investigations into the disappearance of Brian Odhiambo, a fisherman who reportedly went missing on January 18.
Speaking to the media shortly after submitting the petition, some residents voiced their frustrations, accusing Governor Kihika of poor leadership.
They claimed that internal conflicts between the County Secretary and the Deputy Governor had stalled development projects and created confusion in county operations.
“The governor needs to make a decision. She cannot continue running her law firm in Texas while also serving as Nakuru’s governor. Right now, we demand accountability and good governance.
Politics can come later, but service delivery cannot wait,” one resident asserted.
Another resident added, “We have seen disagreements between the County Secretary and the Deputy Governor over who is actually in charge of Nakuru. This confusion is a result of poor leadership, and the people are suffering because of it.”
The petition comes about two months after Governor Kihika issued a public statement explaining her absence, stating that she was on maternity leave.
In a letter dated January 17 and signed by Nakuru County Chief of Staff Peter Ketyenya, Kihika responded to concerns raised by the public, assuring them that she was in good health and currently on leave.
“After receiving numerous calls about my absence, I want to assure the people of Nakuru that I am well and on maternity leave,” Kihika stated.
To ensure that the county government remains functional during her absence, Kihika announced that Deputy Governor David Kones would be overseeing operations in her place.
“I deeply appreciate the concern shown by Nakuru residents, and I want to assure them that service delivery is ongoing under the leadership of Deputy Governor David Kones and a capable team.
I have full confidence in their ability to manage county affairs in my absence,” she noted.
The governor further reassured the public that she would be returning to her official duties soon, stating, “I will resume my responsibilities at the end of my leave in the coming weeks. Thank you, and may God bless you all.”
