Govt Declares New Public Holiday in April

The Kenyan government has officially introduced a new public holiday, which will be observed annually on April 31.

Named ‘National Relaxation Day,’ this holiday was formally announced through a gazette notice and is designed to give hardworking Kenyans a well-deserved break to unwind and reflect.

In the gazette notice, the government emphasized its dedication to the well-being of its citizens, acknowledging the crucial role they play in national development and economic growth.

“The Government of the Republic of Kenya remains fully committed to the welfare and prosperity of its people. The remarkable efforts and contributions of Kenyans towards the country’s progress cannot go unnoticed. In line with the Public Holidays Act and in recognition of the industrious spirit of our people, the government has deemed it necessary to introduce an additional public holiday. This initiative aims to enhance national productivity and improve socio-economic well-being,” the notice read.

A senior government official confirmed the gazette notice, stating that all government offices, businesses, and institutions will be expected to remain closed on that day in compliance with the holiday regulations.

Following the announcement, various government agencies and organizations welcomed the decision, with the Kenya National Welfare Chamber (KNWC) among those supporting the move. The agency highlighted the potential benefits of the new holiday, particularly for domestic tourism.

“This holiday was long overdue. Many Kenyans complain that they barely have time to engage in personal activities beyond work. This break could allow more people to travel and explore local tourist destinations, boosting the industry,” a KNWC representative stated.

A survey conducted by Newshub.co.ke revealed that several businesses have already started preparing for the new public holiday. Hotels, in particular, have begun promoting special holiday packages for April 31, targeting individuals looking to take advantage of the newly declared rest day.

Confusion Over Dates and Labour Day Proximity

One of the main concerns raised by the public is how this new holiday will fit into the calendar, given its close proximity to Labour Day (May 1), which is a well-established international holiday celebrating workers’ rights.

When asked about the potential overlap and logistical challenges, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior reassured Kenyans that all necessary adjustments would be made before the first ‘National Relaxation Day’ is officially observed.

Despite initial confusion, the government has assured citizens that it is committed to making the holiday a reality.

However, one fact remains undeniable—April has only 30 days!

Happy April Fools’ Day! 🎉
