Government Unveils 10-Week Cybersecurity Game With Exciting Prizes

The Ministry of Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy, in partnership with the Slovakian Ministry of Interior and National Administration, has launched a unique 10-week cybersecurity competition, Kenya Cyber Game 2025.

This initiative aims to discover and nurture cybersecurity talent across the country.

The game, the first of its kind in Kenya, was officially introduced on Tuesday, April 1, by ICT Principal Secretary John Tanui, alongside Slovakian Ambassador Katarina Zuffa Leligdonova.

Objective and Participation

Speaking at the launch, Tanui explained that the competition is designed to engage university students, learners from tertiary institutions, and professionals in the industry.

Themed ‘Unlocking Your Cybersecurity Potential,’ the challenge will run until June 9, 2025, and will serve as a platform for participants to showcase and improve their skills in cybersecurity.

Kenyans interested in taking part can register through the player interface, with only Kenyan citizens eligible for prizes. However, non-Kenyan participants are welcome to join as non-competing players.

Structure and Categories

The competition is free to enter and will feature new cybersecurity challenges every week. These challenges will cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • Malware Analysis
  • Digital Forensics
  • Cryptography
  • Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT)
  • Offensive Security
  • Security Governance and Processes

Prizes will be awarded across different categories, including students, junior participants, and individuals from both the public and private sectors.

Winners will receive various rewards, such as tech gadgets, cybersecurity training vouchers, software licenses, and gift cards for technology stores.

Additionally, outstanding participants who meet the required age criteria will have the opportunity to be considered for Kenya’s National Cyber Security Team.

This team will represent the country in regional and international cybersecurity competitions.

Rising Cyber Threats in Kenya

The launch of Kenya Cyber Game 2025 comes at a time when the country is witnessing a significant rise in cyber threats.

According to a recent report from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), cyber threats in the country surged by 27.2% in the second quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year.

Between October and December 2024, a staggering 840 million cyber threats were detected within Kenya’s technology space.

The report further highlighted that system vulnerabilities were the most widespread issue, accounting for 752.4 million threats during this period.

With the rise in cybersecurity challenges, the Kenya Cyber Game 2025 is expected to play a crucial role in identifying skilled individuals who can help protect Kenya’s digital infrastructure.

The government hopes this initiative will encourage more young professionals to develop expertise in cybersecurity and strengthen the nation’s defenses against cyber threats.
