Kenya Met Department Releases 5-Day Weather Forecast: Rain and Cold Temperatures Expected Across Several Regions
The Kenya Meteorological Department has announced that rainfall will continue across many parts of the country this week, with a significant drop in temperatures expected in some areas.
The forecast, which covers the period from Tuesday, May 27, to Saturday, May 31, also includes a warning of strong winds in specific regions.
Cold Weather in Highlands East of the Rift Valley
According to the Met Department’s latest statement issued on Monday, May 26, regions in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley should brace for very cold conditions, particularly on Thursday when temperatures could fall as low as one degree Celsius. These low temperatures are expected to be most felt at night.
Counties likely to experience these chilly conditions include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi.
During the week, residents in these counties will wake up to cloudy mornings that will later turn into sunny intervals, except on Thursday when light rainfall is expected in a few areas.
In the afternoons and during the night, the weather forecast shows that showers will fall in scattered areas, though Friday night is likely to remain dry with partly cloudy skies.
The maximum daytime temperatures in these areas will reach up to 28 degrees Celsius, while the coldest temperatures at night, especially on Thursday, could drop to just one degree Celsius.
Eastern and Southeastern Counties to Remain Mostly Sunny
In counties such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, as well as inland areas of Tana River County, residents should expect mainly sunny mornings and afternoons throughout the week.
However, brief rain showers may be experienced in a few places on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.
Nighttime conditions in these regions are forecasted to be partly cloudy. The maximum temperatures are expected to rise up to 31 degrees Celsius, while the lowest nighttime temperatures will hover around 12 degrees Celsius.
Coastal Counties to Experience Rain Showers
Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and coastal parts of Tana River County are expected to receive rain in a few places at different times of the day—morning, afternoon, and night—throughout the week. However, Wednesday night may remain dry and only partly cloudy.
Temperatures in the coastal region are expected to remain warm, with highs reaching 32 degrees Celsius and lows around 24 degrees Celsius.
Showers Expected Across the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley
Counties within the Lake Victoria Basin, Central and Western Rift Valley, and some parts of Western Kenya—including Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot—should prepare for rain showers in the afternoon and at night throughout the week.
Despite the rainfall, sunny intervals are predicted in the mornings of Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, offering some reprieve from the wet conditions.
Daytime temperatures will rise to a maximum of 29 degrees Celsius, while nighttime lows could fall to around 10 degrees Celsius.
Turkana and Samburu to Remain Dry and Hot
In contrast, Turkana and Samburu counties are expected to stay largely dry with sunshine dominating the day. The nights, however, will be partly cloudy.
The highest daytime temperatures in these areas could soar to 36 degrees Celsius, while nighttime temperatures may drop to 11 degrees Celsius.
Warning on Strong Winds
The Meteorological Department has also issued a caution about strong winds expected in various parts of the country.
Specifically, the Coast, Southeastern Lowlands, Northeastern, and Northwestern regions could experience winds blowing at speeds above 25 knots (equivalent to 12.86 meters per second).
These strong winds may affect outdoor activities and pose potential risks in exposed areas.
