Murkomen Reveals When DIG Lagat Will Resign

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has stated that Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Eliud Lagat will not be stepping down anytime soon.

Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, June 16, Murkomen clarified that the investigations into the death of Albert Ojwang are still ongoing.

The investigations are being handled by the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA). So far, there is no concrete evidence that would warrant the resignation of DIG Lagat, who is among the top leaders in the police service.

Murkomen praised Lagat as an experienced and well-trained police officer. He said that unless the ongoing investigation reveals serious misconduct, there is no immediate reason to ask him to step aside.

If new information comes up in the future that implicates him, the necessary action will be taken then.

“On the matter of whether DIG Lagat should resign, I want to say that the investigation is already being carried out by IPOA,” Murkomen said. “DIG Lagat is a well-seasoned officer who knows how investigations are conducted.

If his actions or his role are found to interfere with the process, then we will deal with that when the time comes.”

Murkomen made it clear that he would not interfere with the investigation or influence any decision about Lagat’s position.

He emphasized that IPOA will make the final decision on whether Lagat’s continued stay in office is affecting the integrity of the investigation. At the moment, Lagat is still cooperating with IPOA as part of the ongoing probe.

He is considered a key witness and the complainant in the case that led to the arrest of Ojwang, who later died while in custody at the Central Police Station.
