DCI Questions Gachagua Ally Over Allegations of Funding Protests

Former National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) CEO Geoffrey Mwangi has spoken out strongly against what he describes as a political witch hunt, following a tense interrogation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers.

Mwangi explained that on Monday, July 1, he received a phone call from the DCI office in Nakuru, summoning him to appear at their offices on Thursday, July 3. Respecting the summons, he presented himself and was subjected to hours of questioning.

The former CEO was interrogated over claims that he played a major role in organizing the unrest that erupted in Nakuru during the anti-government demonstrations held on June 25.

Authorities also accused him of plotting and financially supporting similar protests expected to take place during the upcoming Saba Saba Day on July 7.

“They summoned me and read out allegations against me, claiming that I have been holding secret meetings with protest organizers and planning unrest. But I want to make it clear that these allegations are completely false and without any basis,” Mwangi stated.

He went on to say that the accusations are purely politically motivated, meant to scare him away from his growing political ambition, particularly his plans to run for Nakuru Governor.

Mwangi, however, remained firm, insisting that such intimidation tactics would not stop him or his political party, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), from pushing forward with their agenda.

“Kenya is a democratic country, and I am a law-abiding citizen. These threats will not shake us. I will not step down from my plans to lead this county. I am determined to be on the ballot when that time comes, and no amount of intimidation will change that,” Mwangi said confidently.

According to Mwangi and other DCP members, there are alleged schemes to hijack the Saba Saba protests and stir up violence and looting. Mwangi is now being accused of being behind these plans, a charge his supporters say is completely unfounded.

“They are accusing Mwangi of funding the June 25 unrest and planning the Saba Saba protests. These are baseless, malicious accusations meant to damage his image and discredit the DCP Party.

It’s a political attack from our opponents who are afraid of the growing support for Mwangi,” said a party official who accompanied him to the DCI offices.

Geoffrey Mwangi has emerged as a key political figure in Nakuru County. His influence has grown significantly since he received endorsements from elders representing various communities in the region.

These elders said that after lengthy consultations, they concluded that Mwangi was the most capable and balanced leader who could represent all residents fairly.

Apart from his involvement with the DCP Party led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Mwangi has been a vocal leader pushing for change and accountability. He is widely expected to contest the Nakuru gubernatorial seat under the DCP party in the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga has stated that, as of now, police have not received any formal notification regarding the planned July 7 demonstrations, popularly known as Saba Saba Day.
