President William Ruto has joined Kenyans and the entire African continent in mourning the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday.

In a statement released on Monday, President Ruto described Buhari’s death as a major loss not only to Nigeria but to Africa as a whole. He praised Buhari’s significant role in liberation efforts and in promoting regional development and unity across the continent.

“On behalf of the Government and People of the Republic of Kenya, I extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Your Excellency, the Government, and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the passing of H.E. President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” President Ruto stated.

Ruto hailed the late Nigerian leader as a wise man with an unshakable commitment to public service. He specifically praised Buhari’s strong fight against corruption, his work to improve regional security, and his efforts to boost Africa’s economic cooperation and integration.

The Kenyan President also looked back on Buhari’s State Visit to Nairobi in January 2016, calling it an important moment that deepened the diplomatic and economic relationship between Kenya and Nigeria.

President Ruto further remembered Buhari’s message of congratulations after his own election victory in August 2022. He said the gesture was a clear sign of Buhari’s respect for democracy and his belief in Pan-African solidarity.

“In this time of sorrow and mourning, Kenya stands shoulder to shoulder with the Government and People of Nigeria,” Ruto said. “May the late President Buhari’s legacy continue to guide us as we work together toward peace, unity, dignity, and shared prosperity for all Africans.”

He ended his message by expressing personal sympathy to Buhari’s family and by affirming Kenya’s commitment to keeping the strong and growing relationship between Kenya and Nigeria alive and active.

According to a statement from the Nigerian presidential press office, Buhari passed away in London on Sunday at around 4:30 p.m. after battling a long illness. He was 82 years old.

Muhammadu Buhari was a retired military general known for his tough stance on corruption. He first took control of Nigeria’s government in a military coup in 1983 but was later overthrown in another coup in 1985.

Years later, he returned to power through democratic elections, becoming one of Nigeria’s most prominent leaders in the fight against corruption.

Born in December 1942 in Daura, a town in Katsina State in northern Nigeria, Buhari came from the Fulani ethnic group and practiced Islam. He received his military training in various parts of the world, including Kaduna in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, India, and the United States.

His leadership and determination shaped Nigeria’s governance and inspired many across the continent.

Buhari leaves behind a legacy of discipline, integrity, and Pan-African vision that will be remembered for generations to come.
