Why Police Released Three Suspects Arrested Over the Killing of Lawyer Mbobu

Three people who had been arrested in connection with the killing of prominent lawyer Kyalo Mbobu have now been released after investigators failed to find any evidence linking them to the crime.

The suspects were freed on Saturday, September 13, according to their lawyer, Maulid Bare. He explained that although the three individuals were initially held because they were among the last people seen with Mbobu before his tragic death, police could not connect them to the assassination through any concrete findings.

Bare strongly criticized the arrest of his clients, describing it as “malicious, unjustified, and a reckless abuse of police powers.” He further explained that crucial forensic tests had cleared them of suspicion.

These included the analysis of their mobile phone records, the ballistic tests carried out on the firearm used in the murder, and verification of their movements at the time of the crime. “The forensic phone analysis, the ballistic examination of the weapon, and the confirmed alibis have all conclusively shown that the three had nothing to do with the killing,” Bare stated.

Lawyer Mbobu, who had been practicing for more than 30 years, was gunned down in a shocking drive-by shooting along Magadi Road on the evening of Tuesday, September 9.

The attack happened around 7:30 p.m. near the Galleria Brookside area as he was driving home. An assailant riding on a motorcycle opened fire at his car and immediately sped off, leaving him fatally wounded.

The brazen killing of such a senior lawyer has sparked public concern and prompted swift action from security agencies.

On Thursday, September 11, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen assured the public that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was actively pursuing the case and making progress.

Murkomen revealed that detectives had already identified more suspects and persons of interest believed to be connected to the crime.

He also confirmed that several eyewitnesses had stepped forward to share valuable information, helping investigators piece together the events leading to the murder. “We have been in close contact with the DCI since the incident occurred, and I am encouraged by the progress made.

Persons of interest have been identified, interrogations are ongoing, and more suspects are being pursued. We are grateful to the eyewitnesses who were present at the scene and others who have come forward to assist the investigation,” the CS said.

The release of the three suspects has now shifted focus back to the search for the real killers, with investigators working against the clock to uncover who was behind the brutal assassination of Lawyer Mbobu.
