Joho and Kabogo Under Fire for Eating Snacks During Ruto’s UNGA Address

Joho and Kabogo Criticised for Eating Snacks During Ruto’s UNGA Address

A Kenyan delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York has come under fire after a video surfaced showing some of its members eating during the session.

The delegation featured several top government officials, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, Defence CS Aden Duale, Lands CS Alice Wahome, Mining CS Hassan Joho, and ICT representative William Kabogo.

In the video that spread widely across social media, the leaders were seen chewing snacks right as Africa’s bid for a permanent seat at the UN was being discussed.

The footage showed some of them cracking what looked like peanuts and eating them while President William Ruto was speaking on the global platform.

The clip drew a mix of reactions online. While some viewers found the moment amusing or harmless, others strongly criticised the officials, accusing them of behaving inappropriately during a serious international event.

Several Kenyans said the leaders had embarrassed the country on a global stage. Others, however, argued that the behaviour simply reflected their everyday attitudes.

“That’s actually poetic. I’m sure they have no idea what’s really going on over there, not even Prime CS Mudavadi, who appears to be attentive,” one social media user wrote.

Another person commented, “Nothing screams ‘Kenya means business’ like Ruto’s squad turning a global podium into a snack table.”

This incident has revived a past conversation about the conduct of public officials, especially because it comes less than two years after President Ruto himself pushed for etiquette training for government leaders.

In September 2022, while speaking to Kenya Kwanza leaders, the President said it was important for officials to learn proper behaviour in public and private settings to avoid embarrassing moments.

Ruto explained that the government planned to organise sessions to train leaders on dining etiquette, table manners and general decorum.

“We are going to have a session to show you a bit of etiquette. We want to show you what to do because sometimes we get embarrassed when some leaders do not even know how to hold a spoon,” the President said at the time.
