Ruto Backs Majembe vs Mbavu the Destroyer Ahead of April Boxing Showdown
President William Ruto has added fresh excitement to the highly anticipated boxing match between viral internet personalities Majembe and Mbavu the Destroyer after pledging financial support to both fighters ahead of their much-talked-about showdown scheduled for April 4, 2026, in Nairobi.
The Head of State made the unexpected announcement during a meeting with Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, widely known as Jalang’o.
During the interaction, Jalang’o briefed the President about the upcoming fight, which has attracted massive attention online and sparked conversations across social media platforms in Kenya.
The match, which began as playful online exchanges between the two personalities, has since grown into a major entertainment event attracting fans from across the country.
Speaking lightheartedly about the bout, President Ruto wished both fighters success and encouraged them to give their best performance in the ring.
He announced that he would contribute Ksh 1 million to each boxer, a move that further increased public interest in the contest.
His pledge was seen by many as recognition of how social media personalities are increasingly shaping modern entertainment and sports culture in Kenya.
In addition to the financial support, the President also revealed plans to sponsor tickets for 2,000 fans to attend the event.
According to the announcement, 1,000 tickets will be allocated to supporters of Majembe, while another 1,000 tickets will go to fans backing Mbavu the Destroyer. The gesture is expected to boost attendance and further fuel the competitive atmosphere surrounding the fight.
The boxing match is being organized by comedian and media personality Oga Obinna, who initially introduced the idea after online exchanges between the two fighters gained traction. What started as casual social media banter has now evolved into one of the most anticipated amateur sporting events in the country.
Although the exact venue in Nairobi has not yet been confirmed, organizers have indicated that details will be released in the coming weeks as preparations continue.
Several well-known personalities have also shown interest in the event by supporting the fighters in different ways. Businessman Oketch Salah pledged Ksh 200,000 to help support both boxers and grow the prize pool, while Jalang’o publicly declared his support for Mbavu the Destroyer.
On the other hand, celebrated Kenyan rapper Khaligraph Jones threw his weight behind Majembe, adding further celebrity attention to the upcoming contest.
Nairobi’s Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, also joined the conversation by offering to assist in training one of the fighters as part of preparations for the bout.
Such involvement from public figures has helped maintain the momentum and excitement building around the event.
Jalang’o, who has played a key role in promoting the fight, welcomed the President’s involvement and praised the move as a positive boost for local talent and entertainment.
During the interaction, both leaders echoed the now-popular phrase associated with the bout, “weka mawe,” a slogan that has become widely linked to the growing hype around the match.
The rising popularity of amateur boxing in Kenya gained momentum toward the end of 2025 when Majembe’s TikTok videos began circulating widely online. In the clips, he showcased his boxing skills while openly challenging anyone willing to step into the ring with him.
The videos quickly attracted attention, leading to several content creators expressing interest in facing him. Among them was Mbavu the Destroyer, whose challenge was eventually accepted, setting the stage for the upcoming clash.
As anticipation continues to build, the April 4 bout is shaping up to be more than just a boxing match. For many fans, it represents the growing influence of social media personalities in mainstream entertainment and highlights how digital fame can quickly transform into real-world sporting events that capture national attention.
