Autopsy Confirms Cause of Death of Man at Sifuna Rally

Autopsy results released by government pathologists have confirmed that 28-year-old Vincent Ayomo, who died during a Kitengela Linda Mwananchi rally on Sunday, February 15, 2026, was killed by a gunshot wound to the left eye.

The bullet caused extensive damage, fracturing his spinal cord, injuring his brain, and ultimately leading to his death.

The postmortem, conducted on Thursday, revealed that the bullet entered through Ayomo’s left eye, fractured his spinal cord, penetrated his brain, and exited through the back of his head. This trajectory caused fatal injuries that left him unable to survive.

Ayomo, a mechanic and father, was shot while attending the rally. He had reportedly been on his way home from work to pick up spare parts when the incident occurred.

His family had previously expressed concerns about delays in the post-mortem process at the Nairobi Funeral Home, believing that he had been shot by police officers.

Witness statements support these claims, with one eyewitness describing how Ayomo was simply walking, minding his own business, when a stray bullet struck him in the eye and penetrated his skull.

Further accounts from witnesses indicate that heavy rain was falling during the rally, making the situation even more chaotic. As police used teargas to disperse the crowd, Ayomo’s body was left exposed on the ground.

Multiple vehicles, including Land Cruisers, reportedly passed by without offering assistance, leaving his body unattended in the midst of the turmoil.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who led the Orange Democratic Movement Linda Mwananchi faction, confirmed Ayomo’s death on February 16. Sifuna stated that Ayomo was fatally shot by police officers deployed to manage the crowd using both teargas and live ammunition.

He accused President William Ruto’s administration of exercising state violence, vowed to seek justice for Ayomo’s family, and highlighted that several other rally participants were injured during the police intervention.

The Sunday rally drew a large turnout and featured several high-profile opposition figures. Among them were Babu Owino, Caleb Amisi, James Orengo, Richard Onyonka, and Godfrey Osotsi, among others.

In response to the incident, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) launched a high-priority investigation into Ayomo’s death. IPOA Vice Chairperson Ann Mwangi confirmed that a rapid response team has been deployed to Kajiado County to investigate the incident.

She expressed deep concern over both the loss of life and the number of injuries reported during the rally.

Meanwhile, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen suggested that the chaos at the Kitengela rally was partly caused by individuals allegedly brought in from Machakos.

Speaking in Naivasha during a Huduma na Usalama mashinani forum, Murkomen claimed that these outsiders were transported specifically to disrupt the rally, prompting police to act with force.

He added that police had not been officially notified about the gathering, which limited their ability to manage the crowd effectively.

The tragic death of Vincent Ayomo has sparked outrage and intensified calls for accountability, with political leaders and citizens alike demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the response of law enforcement during the rally.
