William Ruto and Oburu Odinga have announced the formation of a new broad-based management committee aimed at strengthening cooperation between the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The decision to establish this committee was reached on Thursday, April 23, following a high-level consultative meeting held at State House Nairobi. The meeting brought together senior officials from both parties, signaling a growing effort to formalize collaboration and align political strategies ahead of future national engagements.
According to an official communication from State House, the newly formed committee will include a mix of key leaders drawn from both political sides.
These will consist of selected Cabinet Secretaries, senior party officials, as well as leaders representing both the Majority and Minority sides in Parliament. This structure is designed to ensure that both the executive and legislative arms of government are fully represented in the decision-making process.
The primary responsibility of the committee will be to coordinate and harmonize government activities across different levels.
In particular, it will focus on aligning legislative priorities with executive actions to promote consistency, improve efficiency, and enhance service delivery to citizens.
By creating a unified approach, the leaders hope to reduce internal conflicts and ensure smoother implementation of government policies.
As part of the resolutions made during the meeting, the leaders also directed party chairpersons from both UDA and ODM to maintain continuous and structured consultations. These engagements are expected to take place regularly across various party organs to strengthen internal communication and avoid misunderstandings that could weaken the partnership.
During the discussions, both Ruto and Oburu emphasized the importance of dialogue, unity, and working towards a common national vision. They reiterated their commitment to building a cooperative political environment that prioritizes the interests of Kenyans over party differences.
Although the exact operations of the committee are yet to be fully outlined, the outcome of the meeting has already set the stage for more intense political negotiations.
Observers believe that this initiative could pave the way for a broader political agreement between UDA and ODM as the country gradually shifts focus towards the 2027 general elections.
One of the key issues expected to be addressed by the committee is the ongoing debate around electoral zoning. This matter has recently caused tension within ODM, with some leaders expressing concerns about how positions and regions will be shared between the two parties.
The idea behind zoning is to prevent direct competition between coalition partners in certain areas, thereby increasing their chances of winning seats without splitting votes.
Sources within ODM have hinted that discussions are ongoing, and there is a possibility that both parties may agree not to field candidates against each other in selected regions.
However, this proposal has not been universally accepted, with some party members raising concerns about fairness and political independence.
The zoning debate has, in recent days, exposed cracks within ODM and sparked broader questions about the stability and future of the emerging alliance.
Political analysts warn that if not handled carefully, these internal disagreements could undermine the unity the coalition is trying to build.
Despite these challenges, the continued engagement between UDA and ODM leaders is seen as a strategic move to build consensus on key national and political issues.
These talks are also expected to lay the groundwork for what could eventually become a formal coalition arrangement based on mutual respect and shared goals.
As the discussions progress, many Kenyans will be watching closely to see whether this broad-based approach will translate into tangible political stability and improved governance, or whether internal party tensions will slow down the process.
