The impeachment motion against Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, has gained significant traction.

It was reported that over 240 Members of Parliament (MPs) had already appended their signatures to the motion, well above the required 117 to initiate proceedings. Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, who is spearheading the motion, has accused Gachagua of involvement in an alleged plot to overthrow President William Ruto, alongside other charges like constitutional violations, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.

The momentum for the impeachment was further amplified by coordinated efforts among MPs from various regions, with some holding private meetings to solidify their support for the motion.

A key part of the accusations also revolves around Gachagua’s controversial statements on tribalism and his alleged undermining of the President through political maneuvering.

In response to the impeachment motion, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya announced he would not attend the parliamentary session on the day the motion is tabled.

His decision could be viewed as a stand against the political turmoil currently surrounding Gachagua’s potential ousting.

The impeachment debate has created ripples across the political landscape, and the coming days will determine whether the motion progresses to the Senate, depending on the votes gathered in the National Assembly.
