Nairobi is often referred to as “shamba la mawe,” meaning a barren land full of stones, where making a living requires relentless effort, hard work, and sharp thinking.

In the struggle to survive in this city, many people turn to crime, choosing to take what doesn’t belong to them through theft.

In Nairobi, some individuals are willing to injure or even kill to snatch anything valuable from unsuspecting and often defenseless residents.

There are parts of the city where criminals roam freely, ready to rob at any moment, and there are areas so dangerous that even the police avoid them for fear of their lives.

Lucky Summer estate has, for many years, been considered a safe haven for residents to live and conduct their daily business.

However, in recent times, it has transformed into a hub for criminals. Thieves armed with guns, knives, and machetes now operate openly, robbing people in broad daylight and, in some cases, even shooting their victims.

Githurai, on the other hand, has long been infamous for its dangerous reputation. It’s said that in Githurai, to avoid being robbed, one must go as far as hiding their money and phone.

However, even this isn’t foolproof, as ruthless thieves might harm you just to retrieve those hidden valuables.

Here are some of the most dangerous areas in Nairobi:

  1. Lucky Summer
  2. Githurai
  3. Parts of Kayole
  4. Parts of Kibera
  5. Parts of Mathare
  6. Lunga Lunga
  7. Jericho
  8. Soweto
  9. Mukuru kwa Reuben
  10. Kariokor
  11. Mlango Kubwa
  12. Kongo (section of Dagoretti)
  13. Machakos Country Bus
  14. Bus Station
  15. Moi Avenue (around Kenya National Archives)
  16. The stretch between Nyayo House and Integrity Center
  17. River Road
  18. Luthuli Avenue
  19. Pangani
  20. Eastleigh

Within Nairobi’s CBD, most thieves are pickpockets, primarily targeting phones, wallets, and laptops. As the city grows, these areas remain hotspots for crime, making it essential for anyone navigating the city to stay alert and vigilant.
