President William Ruto recently held a State House meeting with Members of Parliament (MPs) to discuss the Nairobi River Regeneration Project.

This initiative is designed to tackle the severe pollution that has affected Nairobi’s rivers, with plans to restore the river basin’s natural ecosystems and create green public spaces.

The project aligns with Ruto’s “blue and green” urban infrastructure goals, seeking to improve Nairobi’s environmental health and quality of life for its residents.

The Nairobi Rivers Commission, responsible for overseeing the project, is working on various measures to reduce pollution, enhance public health, and promote eco-friendly practices along the river system.

A key component of the regeneration plan is job creation, particularly for youth.

The government intends to employ 200,000 young people across multiple environmental projects, with 20,000 positions dedicated to Nairobi River’s rehabilitation.

The project will include initiatives under the Climate WorX program, focusing on reducing pollution, beautifying riverfronts, and adapting urban spaces to climate change challenges.

Ruto warned polluters of strict accountability measures, emphasizing that everyone must contribute to keeping Nairobi’s rivers clean and sustainable.

The project will soon extend beyond Nairobi to other urban centers, including Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru.

This broader environmental agenda aims to replicate the river restoration model across Kenya, showcasing the government’s commitment to eco-friendly urban planning.

By integrating youth employment with environmental management, the program intends to foster a culture of sustainability and responsibility across Kenya’s cities, ensuring a greener future for all.
