Gachagua Endorses Raila Odinga for African Union Commission Chairperson
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has openly praised former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, endorsing him as the best choice for the upcoming African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson elections.
Speaking in a statement on Friday morning, Gachagua lauded Odinga’s leadership skills, global experience, and unwavering commitment to advocating for Africa’s interests.
He expressed confidence that Odinga was the right person to lead the AU Commission, emphasizing that Africa needs a leader of his caliber.
“Kenya’s finest, Right Honourable Raila Odinga, is undoubtedly the best candidate for the African Union Commission chairmanship. Africa deserves the best.
There is no doubt about Raila’s global outlook and commitment to championing the African people,” Gachagua stated.
The former DP further stressed that Odinga’s leadership would be instrumental in uniting both the English-speaking (Anglophone) and French-speaking (Francophone) regions of Africa.
He believes Odinga has the right character to bridge divides and help shape the continent’s future.
According to Gachagua, a victory for Odinga in Addis Ababa would reinforce his long-standing dedication to Pan-Africanism, a cause he has consistently championed throughout his political career.
“As a continent, we need a Raila Odinga character to gel the Anglophone and the Francophone selves towards the continent of the future.
His win in Addis Ababa imprints his quest for the Pan-African spirit he has lived and championed,” Gachagua remarked.
He further noted that Odinga’s success in securing the top AU role would not only be a win for Africa but also a proud moment for Kenya, his home country.
Gachagua’s endorsement comes just a day before the crucial election, set to take place on Saturday, February 15. Odinga will be up against two other candidates—Djibouti’s Mohamoud Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato.
With campaigns officially concluded, preparations for the election are in full swing. Heads of State from all 55 African Union member nations, including Kenya’s President William Ruto, have already begun arriving in Addis Ababa for the vote.
If Odinga is elected, he will take on the significant responsibility of overseeing the administration and financial management of the AU Commission while working towards advancing the organization’s objectives for the continent’s growth and unity.
