At least four people, including three schoolchildren, lost their lives in a tragic road accident that occurred in the Kibuon area of Nyakach, along the Sondu-Katito highway.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning when a 14-seater matatu lost control and crashed into a truck transporting sugarcane. The impact of the collision was severe, leading to multiple casualties.

Residents, who were quick to respond, rushed to the accident scene and worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped in the wreckage. The injured victims were immediately taken to Nyabondo Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Several pupils from Ober Boys Primary School were among those injured in the crash. They were on their way to school when the accident occurred.

Eyewitness footage from the scene showed the matatu completely wrecked, with a shattered windscreen, broken seats, and damaged windows, while the truck sustained only minor damage.

Authorities are yet to confirm the exact number of those injured. However, traffic police officers arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and have since launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

The crash, which happened around 6 a.m., caused a major traffic snarl-up along the busy highway. Stranded motorists were forced to seek alternative routes as police worked to clear the road.

Rising Road Accidents Across the Country

This accident is the latest in a worrying trend of road tragedies that have been witnessed across the country in recent months.

Just two days earlier, another fatal crash along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highway in Nakuru County claimed the lives of seven people.

According to police reports, the victims were all from the same family and were traveling home after attending a memorial service. Their private car collided head-on with a trailer when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle.

Among the deceased were four children and three adults. A grieving relative told reporters that three of the children were siblings, while the fourth child was the son of their family worker.

Growing Concerns Over Road Safety

The increasing number of road accidents has raised concerns over safety measures on Kenyan roads. A 2025 report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) highlighted the alarming trend, revealing that an estimated 13 people lose their lives daily in road crashes.

According to NTSA data, the most vulnerable road users include cyclists, who account for the highest number of fatalities, followed by pedestrians, three-wheeler drivers, and passengers in normal vehicles.

Authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution and observe traffic rules to prevent further loss of lives on Kenyan roads.
