Several suspected terrorists were shot dead by a multi-agency team of Kenyan security officers after they attempted to sneak into the country through the Kenya–Somalia border.
The swift and coordinated response by the specialised units helped stop what could have become a major security threat, bringing calm to an area that is often considered dangerous due to frequent militant activity.
According to a statement released by Counter Terrorism Policing Kenya on Sunday, November 30, the militants tried to cross the border under the cover of darkness.
However, the highly trained officers stationed along the frontier noticed unusual movements early enough and moved in before the group could enter the country.
The multi-agency team, which included officers from the counter-terrorism department and other specialised units, quickly intercepted the suspects. A fierce exchange followed, and the officers gunned down all the militants on the spot.
“A group of terrorists attempted to infiltrate our border. Our special teams manning the border taught them a lesson. With our superior firepower and the commitment of our officers, we will always defeat enemies of the nation,” the Anti-Terrorism Unit stated.
Photos shared by security personnel showed the bodies of the suspected militants lying on dusty ground, although the exact number of those killed has not yet been confirmed.
This latest incident has added to ongoing concerns about rising insecurity along the Kenya–Somalia border. In recent months, suspected terrorists have been attempting to cross into Kenya, posing a growing challenge for security agencies working around the clock to protect the region.
The shootout also comes barely a month after the Special Operations Group (SOG) foiled a planned Al-Shabaab attack in Garissa County.
In that earlier case, intelligence reports indicated that around eight militants had planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the Welmerer–Yumbia area.
SOG officers reacted immediately, confronting the militants in a fierce gunfight and managing to recover several assembled explosives that were allegedly meant to target Kenyans.
After the successful operation, security officials praised members of the local community for their vigilance. They noted that timely information from residents played a crucial role in stopping the planned attack and preventing a possible tragedy.
