Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua arrived at Parliament Buildings amidst heightened tension as he faced an impeachment trial.

This came after the High Court declined to halt the Senate’s impeachment process against him, following a motion tabled by ex-Senator Cleophas Malala.

The court dismissed Malala’s petition, which argued that Parliament lacked the constitutional two-thirds gender rule, giving the green light for the impeachment to proceed.

Gachagua arrived with a convoy around 4:45 pm and was set to defend himself against a series of charges, including allegations of inflammatory public utterances and the unlawful acquisition of assets in multiple counties.

He was given two hours to present his defense before Parliament, as lawmakers prepared to debate the motion led by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse.

The impeachment motion has garnered significant support, with over 300 MPs already appending their signatures to the motion. If the impeachment passes in the National Assembly, the matter will be escalated to the Senate for further action.
